How To Spring Clean Your Mattress

Spring cleaning isn’t just for your floors and closets—your mattress deserves some love too! Considering we spend nearly a third of our lives in bed, keeping your mattress fresh and clean is essential for better sleep and overall health. Here’s how to give your mattress the deep clean it needs this spring.

Strip It Down

Start by removing all bedding, including sheets, pillowcases, mattress protectors, and comforters. Toss them in the wash on a hot cycle to kill dust mites and bacteria. If possible, dry your bedding in the sun for a natural disinfectant boost.

Vacuum Thoroughly

Using your vacuum’s upholstery attachment, go over the entire mattress, focusing on seams and crevices where dust and debris collect. This step helps eliminate allergens, dead skin cells, and pet dander.

Deodorize with Baking Soda

Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the mattress surface and let it sit for at least 15 minutes (or up to a few hours for a deeper refresh). Baking soda naturally neutralizes odors and absorbs moisture. Afterward, vacuum up the baking soda thoroughly.

Spot Clean Stains

For tough stains, mix a mild detergent with water or use a vinegar and water solution. Lightly dab (never soak) the stained area with a clean cloth. Avoid using too much liquid, as excess moisture can seep into the mattress and lead to mold growth.

Let It Air Out

If possible, place your mattress in direct sunlight for a few hours. Sunlight acts as a natural disinfectant, helping to kill bacteria and freshen up your sleep surface. If outdoor airing isn’t an option, simply open windows and let fresh air circulate in the room.

Rotate or Flip

Many mattresses today are designed for single-sided use, but if yours is flippable, turn it over to even-out wear. Otherwise, rotate your mattress 180 degrees to help maintain its shape and longevity.

Protect Your Investment

Once your mattress is clean and fresh, consider using a high-quality mattress protector to keep it in top shape. A protector helps guard against spills, dust mites, and allergens, extending the life of your mattress.

A clean mattress doesn’t just feel better—it promotes healthier sleep and improves indoor air quality. By making mattress cleaning part of your spring refresh, you’ll create a healthier, more comfortable sleep environment.
