Saturday the 22nd of April is Earth Day. Since being established in 1970, Earth Day has been an important day for everyone to remember that taking care of the environment is one of the best things we can do for ourselves and future generations.
From all of us here at My Green Mattress, we want to take a moment to recognize this important day and reflect together on some ways that we can all do our part to contribute to a healthy environment.
But first, let’s learn about the history of this national day. What is Earth Day and how did it come about?
The History of Earth Day
The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, and was organized by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. He wanted to raise public awareness about environmental issues and put them on the national political agenda. He chose April 22nd to celebrate Earth Day because it was a day between Spring Equinox and Arbor Day.
The first Earth Day was a huge success, with over 20 million people participating in events across the United States. It helped spark the modern environmental movement and led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of important environmental legislation, such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act.
Since then, Earth Day has become a global event celebrated in over 190 countries. Each year, the Earth Day Network, a non-profit organization, coordinates events and campaigns to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainability.
Today, Earth Day remains an important reminder of the need to protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future for all.
How to Celebrate Earth Day in 2023
Observing Earth Day is a great way to show your support for the environment and take action to protect our planet. Here are some simple ideas for observing Earth Day in your local community.
- Participate in local events: Check for Earth Day events in your community, such as clean-up activities or eco-friendly fairs. Participating in local events is a great way to meet like-minded people and take action to protect the environment. You can go to earthday.org to get more information and learn about local and national initiatives.
- Plant a tree: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants, providing cleaner air and reducing the effects of climate change. Planting a tree is a great way to celebrate Earth Day and make a positive impact on the environment. Invite friends, make it a celebration!
- Conserve energy: Some people even go so far as to try not to use electricity at all or for some part of the day. If that’s not possible, then try to be mindful of unplugging appliances when not in use, and turning off lights and other electronic devices.
- Go green with transportation: Walk, bike, or take public transportation instead of driving alone. Carpooling with others is another great way to reduce your carbon footprint.
- Learn more about environmental issues: Take the time to learn more about the environmental challenges we face and what you can do to help. Read articles, books, and watch documentaries to become more informed about the issues.
Remember, even small actions can make a big difference. Whatever you do to observe Earth Day, the most important thing is to take action and make a commitment to protecting our planet.
Not Just on April 22nd, but Everyday. Committing to a Greener Future on Earth Day
Not just on April 22nd, but everyday: Earth Day is a great time to reflect on our impact on the environment and to make positive changes in our daily lives. It’s a great day to think about the kind of changes you are willing to take all year round, to live a cleaner, greener life. Here are some pointers for being more eco-friendly:
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Practice the 3 R’s to minimize waste. Reduce the amount of waste you generate by avoiding single-use plastics, such as straws, water bottles, and bags. Reuse items as much as possible, such as shopping bags or containers, and recycle what you can.
- Conserve energy: Turn off lights and appliances when they’re not in use. Unplug electronics when they’re not in use, or use power strips to easily turn off multiple devices at once.
- Use environmentally-friendly products: Choose eco-friendly products, such as biodegradable cleaning products, to reduce your impact on the environment.
- Reduce water usage: Take shorter showers, fix leaks, and avoid running the faucet unnecessarily. Conserving water helps preserve this valuable resource and saves energy.
- Buy local and organic: Support local farmers and reduce the carbon footprint of your food by choosing organic produce. Organic products result in lower levels of pesticides in the environment, protecting biodiversity and human health. Buying local is also crucial for a green future because it reduces the carbon footprint of shipping items that could have been made locally.
- Go paperless: Opt for electronic bills, receipts, and other documents whenever possible. This helps reduce paper waste and saves energy.
- Use public transportation or carpool: Reduce your carbon footprint by using public transportation or carpooling instead of driving alone.
